This was the second home we designed for this client whose first house was a more modern house in a suburban neighborhood.
For this house, they wanted a departure from their first modern style house. The only two program requirements we were provided was a single-window style they had seen while traveling, and the desire for a sense of volume within the house. The site was private, wooded, and nestled in an area of several acre building sites. The plan was designed so visitors would enter the front door into a lower ceiling, a smaller intimate entry space with a view to a larger octagon-shaped 2 1/2-story foyer.
The upper ceiling of the foyer includes a feature window allowing the foyer to be bathed in natural light. When standing in the grand foyer, each side of its octagon shape provides glimpses into the first floor spaces beyond. Some of the second-floor halls also have overlook balconies into the grand foyer.
As the windows were an important part of the design character, we chose a manufacturer that offered the flexibility to design what we wanted while being within budget. After completion, the window manufacturer featured this home on the cover of their product catalog and included an article about our firm and the house. See ‘Weathershield’ on our “About Media” page.
