The clients purchased this small, neglected house on a pleasant piece of land scattered with Magnolia trees. The building was gutted removing everything down to the structure, most interior walls were removed and a new floor plan was designed to suit the client’s program. A new addition increased the area of the home and included on the first floor, an entrance portico, foyer, kitchen, dining room, living room, library, and powder room. The second floor included a master bedroom suite, two additional bedrooms, and a bathroom. The original house had a gambrel barn-style roof which the client found appealing so we maintained the original lines of the roof and designed the new additions with gambrel roofs. Exterior materials included cedar siding, hand-split cedar roof shingles, stone and stucco, and true-divided windows. The fireplace chimney was non-functional so a new brick chimney was designed and terracotta clay pots were added to the tops. The client, also a pilot, wanted a building where he could build an airplane. Following the size and special requirements and specifications for the fuselage and wings, we designed a detached building where the plane could be built. The garage building mimicked the architecture of the main house and we designed a mahogany trellis on the side facing the courtyard. Within the trellis is a window with the same. Later this building would serve as a 2-car garage. Between the house and the garage building, we designed a courtyard for outdoor living as well as a new meandering driveway while maintaining the many existing flowering magnolia trees. The 3D colored renderings were prepared for presentation to the town’s zoning board of adjustment as approval from this board was required for zoning conflicts.
