Back Yard Oasis Home

This home was built in a neighborhood of simple traditional style homes with little attention to detail. During our initial programming meeting with the clients they explained their wish to add a screened-in porch accessed through their kitchen eating area. They mentioned they were considering the addition of a pool and wanted the porch to expand their living space outdoors. In speaking with them they shared their fondness of watching movies as a family and they also wanted their children to be able to invite friends over to swim. 

In consideration of this, we walked the interior of the home and suggested changing the existing windows of the family room to glass doors which could lead directly to a new expanded deck. The existing family room was rather small so we suggested adding a small addition which would make the room much more functional. We arrived at an addition of 5’ by presenting a floor plan with a furniture layout. To give the home more character we designed a curved window wall and a custom designed “art glass” half circle window with stained glass inserts allowing a playful pattern of color and light to fill the family room. 

A new screened in porch was added as originally contemplated but we added a volume ceiling finished with cedar wood planks. The roof of this structure was designed to provide a high interior ceiling to allow heat to rise in summer. The exterior of this roof was stopped short of rising to a peak to allow the existing bedroom to maintain its view to the rear yard. 

Appreciating our design of the home’s addition, the clients asked us to continue our concept to provide a seamless design with the pool. We designed the new deck to step down to a new patio which we included a ground level fire pit sitting area accessed through an arbor path, a patio with built-in light piers and landscape areas. Working with their pool contractor, we rotated the pool and spa orientation for a better compatibility with the patio and deck.
